Spanish Mackerel Fishing Charters St. Petersburg | Tampa Bay | Daybreaker Inshore Charters

Hey everybody, it's Captain Matt Hilliard here with Daybreaker Inshore Charters out of St. Petersburg. Sixth generation fisherman, born and raised right here chasing these tides through Tampa Bay and down into Charlotte Harbor. My family has been at it for longer than most folks can remember, starting out commercial before charters even became a thing. That's the kind of roots that don't come from a book.

Spanish mackerel fishing charters are some of the most fun trips I run, especially when the schools show up thick. These fish fight like crazy on light tackle. They slash through bait balls and give you that heart-pounding action that keeps everybody grinning, kids included. Down here we've got prime water for them year-round, but the real magic hits during the spring and fall runs when they migrate along the beaches and into the bay.

I hate seeing so many operations just rush folks out and hope for the best. Not on my boat. I keep things small on purpose with my 22-footer so I can actually pay attention to the conditions and put you on fish instead of burning gas all day. We launch from spots that let us hit the Gulf side quick or stay tucked in the bay depending on the wind and tide. Places like the waters around Fort De Soto Park, the Skyway area, Boca Ciega Bay, or out near Johns Pass and Clearwater Pass when they're stacked up.

What to expect on a Spanish mackerel charter. We'll load up with live greenbacks or threadfins if the bite calls for it, or break out the spoons and jigs for those surface explosions. These fish love a fast retrieve. I've watched it a hundred times. One minute the birds are diving, next thing you're hooked up solid. They average a couple pounds but fight way bigger. Perfect for beginners or families who want constant action without the heavy stuff.

Water temps between 68 and 82 degrees get them fired up. In summer they might push a little deeper or hang near the passes, while cooler months bring them closer to the beaches and grass flats. I read the water the way my granddad taught me. spotting the right current edges and bait schools that the big charter fleets blow right past.

Florida regs are straightforward: 12 inches fork length minimum, 15 per person daily bag limit. We keep it simple and legal. Nothing gets wasted.

Look, I've been doing this my whole life. USCG licensed and insured, no shortcuts on safety. Whether you're coming from Tampa, Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park, or even further, I tailor every trip. Light winds and incoming tide? We'll be on 'em. Summer squall moving in? We adjust real quick. That's the Daybreaker difference. Real local knowledge instead of some cookie-cutter experience.

If you're searching for Spanish mackerel fishing charters near St. Petersburg, Tampa Bay inshore mackerel trips, or family Spanish mackerel adventures in Florida, this is it. Give me a call or book direct. I'll get you on fish and send you home with stories and maybe a cooler full of fillets if the bite's on. No fluff, just solid days on the water with a captain who actually knows these bays like the back of his hand.
