Should I Book an 8-Hour or 10-Hour Fishing Charter in St Petersburg Tampa Bay?

I've run more trips than I can count through Tampa Bay, from the grass flats off Fort De Soto to the mangroves around Weedon Island and down toward Boca Ciega. Folks ask me all the time, should they book an 8-hour or 10-hour inshore fishing charter. It's a good question. Ain't no one-size answer, but I'll give you the straight talk from years of doing this.

Look, an 8-hour trip gets you plenty of solid fishing time. You leave early from the ramp, hit the outgoing tide when the reds and snook start moving, work some structure, and still have time to chase trout on the grass before the heat or afternoon storms kick up. Down here in Pinellas County, especially around Johns Pass or the Skyway area, that length often lines up perfect with the bite. You get quality without burning out the kids or beginners. I've seen families from Clearwater, Largo, and even over from Tampa have a blast and head home happy with a cooler of slot fish. It's my go-to for most folks who want that true Florida inshore experience without it dragging on.

But sometimes you want that 10-hour charter. Those extra two hours can make all the difference when the fish are picky or the tides stretch out. You get to run a little farther, maybe hit some deeper edges or switch spots after the morning bite slows. In summer with those afternoon squalls, or winter when the northers mess with the shallows, having more window lets us adjust on the fly. I've watched it a hundred times. Groups that booked shorter trips miss the second push, while the 10-hour folks stick it out and load up. Especially if you're targeting bigger snook tight to the mangroves or want time for the kids to really get into it.

Truth is, it depends on your group and what you're after. Got little ones or folks new to fishing? Eight hours keeps the energy up and avoids that late-day drag when the sun beats down. Serious anglers or bigger parties who don't mind the full day? Ten hours gives you more chances to find fish as conditions change across Tampa Bay. Either way, I keep my 22-foot boat private so it's just your crew. No herding like some of those bigger operations.
