Do I Need a Fishing License for a Tampa Bay Inshore Charter?

Hey everybody, Captain Matt Hilliard here with Daybreaker Inshore Charters right out of St. Petersburg. One question that comes up constantly is whether you need to run out and buy a fishing license before you come fishing with me in Tampa Bay.

Short answer? No. You don’t. Not on a properly licensed saltwater charter.

The state lets boats like mine carry an FWC charter vessel license. That license covers every paying guest on board for the day. You step on the boat and we’ve already got you taken care of. No separate recreational saltwater license. No Snook permit on top of it. The vessel license handles both for the number of anglers it’s rated for. On my 22-foot boat that’s up to four people.

I grew up in these waters. Sixth generation. My dad had me commercial fishing from the time I could walk. Flats off Fort De Soto, mangroves at Weedon Island, the passes around the Skyway and Boca Ciega Bay. I know how fast the rules can change and I stay on top of every one of them. When they made short-term licenses harder for visitors to buy online, it didn’t change a thing for our trips. Your coverage is already in place.

What gets under my skin is watching people waste time and money because somebody online or some big operation made it sound complicated. I’ve seen it a hundred times. Families from out of town show up thinking they need paperwork in hand or that the captain is going to hit them with an upsell. That’s not how I run things. USCG licensed captain. FWC charter licensed vessel. Full insurance. We follow every slot limit, season, and bag limit to the letter and practice catch and release when it makes sense to keep the fishery strong.

Weather down here can turn on you quick too. Afternoon storms roll in off the Gulf and chew up the bite. A hard west wind lays the grass flats down and changes everything. That’s another reason I keep trips small and personal. We adjust on the fly instead of herding a big group around.

If you’re coming from Clearwater, Largo, Tampa, or anywhere else in the greater Tampa Bay area within thirty miles or so, this is one less thing to worry about. Just bring sunscreen, a hat, and whatever snacks or drinks you want in a cooler. We supply the rods, reels, live and frozen bait, terminal tackle, and fish cleaning if you decide to keep a few for dinner.
