Sea Trout Fishing Charters St Petersburg | Tampa Bay Speckled Trout Trips with Capt Matt Hilliard
Hey everybody, I'm Captain Matt Hilliard, sixth generation fisherman running Daybreaker Inshore Charters right here out of St Petersburg, Florida. I've been chasing speckled sea trout in these Tampa Bay waters my whole life, just like my dad and granddad before me. Down here we don't mess around with fancy talk. We get on the water early, read the tides, and put you on fish.
Sea trout fishing charters are some of my favorite trips, especially when the weather cools off a bit. These fish, also called speckled trout, love the grass flats. They bunch up good in the cooler months from fall through spring. But honestly, we catch them year round if you know where to look. I've watched too many captains drag folks around the same pressured spots. I hate seeing that. My 22 foot boat lets me slip into the skinny water where the bigger trout hang out without spooking them.
Prime spots we hit include the grass flats around Fort De Soto Park, the edges near Weedon Island Preserve, and pockets in Boca Ciega Bay. Places like the channels off John's Pass or the potholes closer to the Skyway can hold solid schools too. When a light north wind lays the water down flat after a front, that's when it gets fun. You can sight fish them sometimes, watching their tails working the grass. Other days we drift with the tide and pick them off the edges.
I keep things simple and effective. Live shrimp under a popping cork is hard to beat, especially for folks new to it. Soft plastics on jigheads work great too, like paddle tails in white or root beer. Early mornings or late afternoons are prime because the heat doesn't shut them down. Summer trips mean we start at first light before the afternoon storms build. Winter, we might slide into deeper cuts or canals where they stack up when it gets chilly.
Florida regs are straightforward in our area. Slot is usually 15 to 19 inches with a bag limit of five per person, one over-slot allowed per vessel. I make sure everybody understands the rules before we leave the dock so you don't get any surprises. Captain and crew don't keep a limit on charter trips. It's about the experience and getting you some action, not filling a cooler every time.
What sets my sea trout trips apart is the personal touch. No herding groups of strangers. I tailor each charter to your group, whether it's family with kids, a couple looking for a relaxing morning, or serious anglers wanting to hunt slot fish. We've got the local knowledge that comes from generations on these tides. Customers from Clearwater, Largo, Dunedin, even over from Tampa tell me they finally felt like they were fishing with a real local instead of just another boat ride.
I've seen the bay change over the years with the weather and the flats recovering. But the trout are still here and hitting good when conditions line up. Nothing beats the sound of that cork popping and the rod loading up with a solid speck. Kids light up when they hook their first one, and experienced guys appreciate the technical side of working the grass lines right.
