Hogfish Fishing Charters St Petersburg | Tampa Bay Nearshore Trips with Captain Matt Hilliard

Hey everybody, it's Captain Matt Hilliard here with Daybreaker Inshore Charters out of the St. Petersburg area. Sixth generation fisherman, born and raised on these tides. My family has chased fish from Tampa Bay all the way down through these waters longer than most folks can remember. Hogfish, or hog snapper as some call em, they're one of those special catches that make a trip worth bragging about. Sweet white fillets that grill up better than just about anything else out there.

Down here we don't mess around with the typical tourist grind. I've watched too many operations promise the world and deliver half a trip. Not on my boat. We run a smaller 22 footer on purpose so I can give you real attention instead of herding everybody around. When conditions line up, we head out to those nearshore spots where the bottom turns rocky and the hogfish set up shop. Think limestone ledges, live bottom patches, and structure in 15 to 40 feet or so, places I've been hitting since I was a kid tagging along with my dad.

Best times? Winter and early spring usually shine brightest after a good cold front clears the water. Those northers push cleaner conditions and the hogs get fired up on live shrimp. But honestly, when the weather cooperates we can find action year round in Gulf state waters. Bag limit sits at five per person at 14 inches fork length right now. I always double check the regs before we leave the ramp because things can shift.

We rig light. 10 to 15 pound braid, long fluoro leader, small circle hooks, and just enough weight to keep that shrimp pinned down. Drop it right on their nose and let em chew. These fish are bottom cruisers. They ain't chasing lures like a redfish. Patience and the right drift make all the difference. I've seen it a hundred times. Guys who listen and stay steady walk away with coolers full while the impatient ones just feed the grunts.

Folks come from St. Pete, Clearwater, Largo, even over from Tampa looking for that real Florida experience without the big boat crowds. Families love it because the action is steady and the fish fight hard enough to keep the kids hooked. Beginners pick it up quick. Experienced anglers appreciate the precision. Either way I adjust the day to you. We might mix in some sheepshead or other reef stuff if the hogs are picky. That's just how it works out here.

Safety first always. USCG licensed and insured. I know these bays, the Skyway area, Boca Ciega, the passes, and exactly how the tide and wind mess with things. No fluff, no corporate nonsense. Just honest local knowledge passed down through generations.
