Grass Flats Fishing Charters in St Petersburg and Tampa Bay

Hey everybody, I'm Captain Matt Hilliard, sixth generation fisherman running Daybreaker Inshore Charters right out of St Petersburg. Born and raised chasing these tides, my family has been working the waters from Tampa Bay down through Pinellas County for generations. I know these grass flats like the back of my hand because I've been on them since I was a kid helping my dad load the boat before sunrise.

Down here the grass flats are where the real magic happens. We're talking those shallow expanses around Fort De Soto Park, the stretches near Johns Pass, and the protected areas off Weedon Island and Boca Ciega Bay. When the tide is right and the water's not too stirred up from a summer squall or winter norther, you can drift across miles of healthy turtle grass and find speckled trout stacked up, redfish tailing in the skinny water, and snook cruising the edges. I've watched it a hundred times. One minute it's quiet, next thing you know the rod's bending and the kids are hollering.

I keep things simple on my 22 foot boat. No crowding, just personal attention so you actually learn how to read the water and work the lures. We pole the shallows when it's calm or drift with the tide when the wind kicks up. Live bait like shrimp or pinfish works great, but I love throwing soft plastics and topwaters too. Nothing beats the explosion when a big trout or slot redfish slams it on the grass flats near Safety Harbor or Pinellas Point.

People come from Clearwater, Largo, Dunedin, even as far as Tampa looking for that true Florida inshore experience. Too many outfits these days rush you through the same tired spots or pack the boat like a party barge. I hate seeing that. My trips are about quality time on the water, whether it's a half day for families teaching the kids or a full day chasing limits with serious anglers. USCG licensed and insured, safety first, always.

Best times? Early mornings when the light is low and the fish are feeding aggressive. Cooler months bring bigger trout on the deeper grass edges, while warmer weather has reds pushing up into the super shallows. I adjust every trip to the conditions and what you want to catch. No cookie cutter stuff here.

If you're searching for grass flats fishing charters St Petersburg, Tampa Bay inshore flats trips, speckled trout fishing near Clearwater, or redfish charters Pinellas County, this is it. Real local knowledge you can't get from a big corporate operation. I've got the stories and the fish to prove it.

Ready to get out there? Give me a call or book direct. I'll get you on the fish and make sure you head home with memories that last. That's the Daybreaker way. Solid days on the grass flats with a captain who actually knows these bays.
